My office got several calls and emails about a shredding/household hazardous waste drop-off that was originally scheduled for Pima College Downtown Campus on Saturday. Unfortunately for the people that showed up, the event had been moved. My staff contacted Environmental and General Services (EGSD), which organized the event, and got this reply:
This past weekend’s HHW drop-off event took place at Jacobs Park(over 300 participants) instead of the Downtown Pima Community College campus. The change of location was requested by Pima Community College due to conflicting construction scheduled on Drachman Street near the date of the event. As soon as the department confirmed a new location for October, the information was updated on our website and shared on social media. The change occurred 3-4 weeks prior to the event. I am sorry for any confusion this caused our residents or for the Ward Office staff.
With the original event flyer shared a year in advance, there are some unforeseeable changes that can come up. We ask all residents to always check our City website for updates and not to rely on third-party sites like a news article related to the event because they may not update the information throughout the year.
As many of you know, both household hazardous waste drop-off and shredding used to happen here at the Eastside Service Center. Unfortunately, we had to end document shredding because of management changes at the company that we used to work with. The hazardous waste drop-off ended more recently when EGSD decided that moving the location to different parts of the city throughout the year would better serve all of the people of Tucson.
My staff checked the Ward 2 web page to make sure that the old information about Saturday’s event was not listed on my page. It wasn’t, but I understand that it continued to be listed on the web, including on places that the city has no control over.
The next two household hazardous waste events (the last for this year) are scheduled for November 13 at the Rodeo Grounds (4823 S 6th Ave, enter on 3rd Ave) and December 11 at Hi Corbett Field (700 S Randolph Way). These will both include document shredding. Make sure to check https://www.tucsonaz.gov/es/household-hazardous-waste in case there are any changes.
I’d like to apologize to any of you that were inconvenienced on Saturday.
